No Starbucks, only Café Santo Domingo!
There's just so much work I do on a computer that I'm always looking for a place with wifi, hence my search for a Starbucks when I first moved to the Dominican Republic. Well, when I got there in 2012, there weren't any, if I'm not mistaken. So if there weren't any Starbucks locations, then that also meant there wasn't going to be any Starbucks coffee for me either. A lot of people would say, "That's great! Why would you want Starbucks when you can have some of the nice, rich coffee from the Dominican Republic?"
The only coffee I can ever remember drinking in the Dominican Republic is that of Café Santo Domingo. I think I had Nestle occasionally too, but mainly I drank a lot of Café Santo Domingo. (By the way, if you ever ask for ice in your coffee in Santo Domingo, you may get some strange looks - iced coffee is not a common thing people ask for. I'm pretty sure in this picture below, Gary and I were at Grand's restaurant in El Conde and I asked for a glass of ice and coffee!)
For the main part, I can't taste the difference between different brands of coffee, but I can taste a difference when I've been drinking one brand for a long time and then I switch and start drinking a new brand. For the main part, I think Café Santo Domingo is good. You probably can't find this coffee in areas of the United States where there are not a lot of people from the caribbean. However, you can definitely find it here in New York if you ever wanted to try it. I saw it in Shop Rite in Yonkers, and I think a lot of the stores here in the Bronx have it as well. My sister liked it, so I bought it for her from Amazon. So if you are in an area where they don't sell Café Santo Domingo, you can get it from Amazon. And, well if you go to the Dominican Republic, you should try it while you're there. Give it a try and let me know what you think.
